The Island of Arran Arran lies in the Firth of Clyde, fourteen miles from the mainland but only four miles from the shelter of the Kintyre peninsula. It is rocky and mountainous to the north, with panoramic views from its highest peak, Goat Fell. The history of any Clearances on Arran is proving to be a little difficult to find; however the population of the island is low enough today to suggest that either Clearances or some other form of radical de-population took place there. It will take a visit to the island to discover what happened there, and this is high on the priority list. BACK TO THE CLEARANCES MAP --------------BACK TO CLEARANCES HOMEPAGE |
