Aberdeenshire and the Eastern Cairngorms Glenshee, Eastern Cairngorms Moray, Banff, Aberdeen, Kincardine, Angus - the hills of the east of the Cairngorms and the coastal plains rich with farms were (and still are) the home of the Inneses, Farquharsons, Lindsays, Robertsons, Stewarts, Grants, Buchans and many others who played major roles in Scotland's own history and in the development of British power abroad. Though outside the area commonly thought of as the Scottish Highlands, their clan structure was strong, and essentially no different to the clan system of the west Highlands, though perhaps their coastal position - and the major port of Aberdeen - gave them access to other influences earlier than the people of the west. There was certainly a great military tradition in this region, as well as the staples of farming and fishing (the latter being a major industry throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and highly developed), and the effects of the Clearances were felt differently here; indeed, Aberdeen and the other busy ports of this north-eastern seaboard were places that many Highlanders looked to for employment in the fishing industry, before, during and after the Clearances.
